Come and join us for the cultural trip

Stockholm is a city that loves culture (Stockholm är en stad som älskar kultur) so it is no surprise that it contains impressive public art. Add to that the fact that the government funds and orders temporary and permanent public art from some of the country's leading artists, which can mean anything from fleeting street performances to permanent installations. You never know what awaits you around the next corner, so here is a taste of Stockholm's best public art (Stockholms bästa offentliga konst).

Subway system

Stockholm's metro system is home to the world's longest art gallery, with many stops transformed through sculpture (skulptur), etching, paintings (tavlor), light installations, and much more. The art of each station has been created for decades by individual artists or a team of artists and represents numerous themes, such as Tekniska technology or the Kungsträdgården underground garden. For the price of a ticket, you can explore all day and fill your senses with art for all ages.

SHH, Quiet, Listen

Stockholm, Sweden

This contoured aluminum hanging sculpture (hängande skulptur av aluminium) has been called a sound wave without sound. The idea is to capture silence along with one of Stockholm's busiest roads, where until recently there was a stable and riding school. Today, the Royal College of Music is located in the new building and this sculpture reminds us to listen to the quiet between the tones.

Leakage in the Garden of Innocence

Thale Vangen's three atmospheric figures (Leakage in the Garden of Innocence) are seemingly in conflict with Karolinska Institutet's scientific environment in Solna, but when you look deeper you realize that both artists and researchers explore the unknown in an attempt to reveal truths to the world. The robustness of the bronze fox gloss contradicts the delicate nature of the flower and reflects the stiff stem. The legs of Pan, stopping in front of the hip, invoke both the devil and eroticism, with their brutal thighs going nowhere. The Velus sculpture (Velus skulptur) has five premature goat heads that emerge from an oversized oyster shell and challenge our thoughts about meaning and material.

Evert Taube

Beloved Swedish musician (Svensk musiker) and troubadour Evert Taube remains in people's hearts, partly because of this statue, which you will find on Järntorget on Riddarholmen. Taube was highly appreciated by Swedes because he kept the traditional Swedish ballad tradition alive. He has appeared on Swedish banknotes and there are several statues of him scattered around the country. This one in particular evokes both his warmth and reputation as a musician.

Morgondagens Väder Stockholm

Tomorrow's Weather Stockholm Central Station installation by the artists Bigert and Bergström is a series of hanging atmosphere molecules, each linked through the Internet to a weather service. The globes change color depending on the weather forecast. In the middle of the group hangs a secular that signals the temperature, moves up and down and from blue to red, depending on cooling and heating. The globes show the weather to come, illustrating the future.

Listening Wall

Stockholm, Sweden

Seven new halls built in what was previously the courtyard of the Stockholm Legislative Court contain installations by May Bente Aronson, which exemplifies the seriousness of court proceedings. But while the weight of the statute (stadgarnas vikt) is felt here, the designs still offer a feeling of capriciousness, with the recent work of plain, abstract forms and perforated surfaces representing the historic building in a contemporary way.

Järnpojke

Stockholm, Sweden

Iron Boy is, only 15 cm high, the smallest public sculpture in Stockholm (minsta offentliga skulpturen i Stockholm). The work, which was found in the Old Town, was created in 1954 by Liss Eriksson, but first settled in its current location in 1967. Just a few meters from the Royal Palace, behind the Church of Finland, you will find it, even if you really have to look for it. Because it is in a place of seclusion, it is something of a secret, but the conscious go there to make a small wish and rent with spare coins, and in winter, kind-hearted strangers place a small scarf around the boy's neck.

Kentauren

The wild half man/half horse, Centaur, was installed on the slope of the northeastern part of the hill at Observatorielunden on the outskirts of Vasastan in 1939, a decade after the hot debate almost stopped the construction. It is one of the sculptors and poet Sigrid Fridman's most famous works, and today the bronze mounts have a view of a beloved place for Stockholmers, who flock to the hill on beautiful summer afternoons.

The Ark

Stockholm, Sweden

Jan Håfström's feeling for ships as well as tar and wood has informed his entire artistic production, and it is no different with The Ark, which is in a file in Stockholm's old town, with the tower in Riddarholmen church casting its shadow over the work. The work reflects the history of the neighborhood, which was once a rough and tumultuous area where merchant ships were anchored and life was focused on the port. The pine leaves rest on steel and granite, which reflects the strength of the past while looking to the future.
